A Comparison of Several Fracture Mechanics Methods for Measuring Interfacial Toughness with Microbond Tests∗

چکیده
Several stress analysis methods were used to find the energy release rate for initiation of an interfacial crack in a microbond specimen. First, we used a recently derived variational mechanics analysis of the stresses in a microbond specimen. Previous studies for analysis of crack growth have used shear-lag methods. For a second analysis, we present a new, and more complete, shear-lag analysis of the microbond specimen. Third, we consider some previously published theories. For each of the stress analyses, the calculated energy release rate was used to predict the debonding stress as a function of the droplet length. The predictions were compared to two experimental results. Our new analyses that include residual thermal stresses were found to be the best. It was further observed that some of the terms in the analysis are negligible. The remaining terms provide a simple tool for doing a fracture mechanics analysis of microbond experiments.

Fracture Mechanics Analysis of the Single-Fiber Pull-Out Test and the Microbond Test Including The Effects of Friction and Thermal Stresses
The energy release rate for propagation of a debond in either a single-fiber pull-out test or a microbond test was derived analytically. The key finding was that an accurate analysis can be derived by a global energy analysis that includes effects of residual stresses and interfacial friction but does not need to include the details of the stress state at the interfacial crack tip. The analytic...

متن کاملFracture Mechanics of Composites with Residual Stresses, Imperfect Interfaces, and Traction-loaded Cracks
By partitioning the total stresses in a damaged composite into either mechanical and residual stresses or into initial and perturbation stresses, it was possible to derive two exact results for the energy release rate due to crack growth. These general results automatically include the effects of residual stresses, tractionloaded cracks, and imperfect interfaces. These effects are normally not ...
متن کاملFracture Mechanics of the Microbond and Pull-out Tests
The properties of the fiber/matrix interface in composites have an influence on their overall performance. Common methods for studying the interface are micromechanical tests that load a single fiber/matrix interface to failure. Two popular tests are the microbond test [1] and the single-fiber, pull-out test [2]. In a microbond test a droplet of matrix is sheared off the fiber by pulling the fi...
